Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking into what led up to a deputy-involved shooting that sent a woman to the hospital early Thursday morning.
Deputies say a woman called 9-1-1 at 2:31 a.m. threatening to kill “her”, but the subject of the call and threat is unknown.
Deputies responding to the call found the woman in some bushes near the Aloha Park Apartments on Southwest 185th Avenue near Baseline Road.
A confrontation in the parking lot ensued and deputies said the woman had her hand in her jacket and claimed she had a firearm.
Deputies said they told the woman to make both hands visible but she did not comply and advanced on them instead. The deputies then opened fire on the woman.
She was injured and taken to Legacy Emanuel hospital for emergency surgery.
Her name and condition has not been released. Deputies have not yet indicated how many times she was shot.
Deputies said the woman turned out not to be armed with a gun or knife but they did not specify what, if anything, the woman had hidden in her jacket.
One witness said he saw the commotion but could not verify the number of gunshots due to the ongoing use of fireworks at night in the area as the July 4th holiday nears.
A woman who lives in the same complex told KATU News the first name of the woman who was shot is Mary and that she had a similar standoff with law enforcement officers a year ago during a suicidal episode.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The names of the deputies who fired their weapons has not yet been released.
