A man with a knife was shot by police Sunday afternoon in Southeast Portland.
A series of calls about 47-year-old Michael Shawn Harrison began at 2:15 p.m., police said. The first call came from a resident in the 1500 block of Southeast Boise Street, saying a man had been cutting himself with a knife before running south.
While on their way to the neighborhood, police received a call from another resident who said she was in her home with two young children when a person armed with a knife broke in. The family hid in the basement.
Harrison was still inside the home when officers arrived. Police contacted the woman and helped her and her children escape. They were not hurt.
Police said Harrison left the home armed with a kitchen knife and sprinted toward the officers.
Sergeant Martin Padilla fired a less-lethal shotgun at Harrison and Officer Raelynn McKay fired her handgun as Harrison sprinted toward them, according to police. Harrison ran between them and slammed into the side of a house. Officers took him into custody.
Police were able to give Harrison medical assistance and he was taken to a local hospital. He suffered several gunshot wounds and self-inflicted knife wounds. Harrison was in critical condition on Monday, according to police.
