Independent Police Review Division Announces Recruitment for Volunteers to Serve on the Citizen Review Committee

City of Portland press release, September 7, 2011

Mary-Beth Baptista, the Director of Portland City Auditor’s Independent Police Review (IPR) division, announces the opening of recruitment for volunteers to serve three-year terms on the Citizen Review Committee (CRC) for five positions commencing in February 2012.

“Service on this committee requires objectivity, fairness, impartiality, and lack of bias — either for or against law enforcement. We are looking for citizens that have a strong commitment to public service,” said Baptista.

IPR is the division responsible for the civilian oversight of the Portland Police Bureau (Police Bureau). IPR is monitored and advised by a nine-member Citizen Review Committee. CRC members hear community and Police Bureau member appeals of police misconduct investigations, listen to public concerns regarding police conduct, engage in training and other activities to learn about policing, review Police Bureau policies and procedures, and advise IPR on complaint handling processes.

Applications are available at the IPR office in City Hall as well as on IPR’s website at www.portlandoregon.gov/auditor/ipr. Candidates must be Portland, Oregon residents or business owners. Applications will be evaluated and scored by the Selection Committee, and the most qualified candidates will be asked to appear for an interview. Those selected will be presented for appointment by City Council.

Applications must be received at the IPR office in City Hall by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Delivery can be done by: mail or in person at 1221 SW 4th Avenue, Room 320, Portland OR, 97204, email at ipr@portlandoregon.gov, or fax at 503-823-3530. Please call IPR’s main line at 503-823-0146, if you have any questions.

“I cannot say enough about the integrity and work ethic of the outstanding CRC volunteers — I am encouraged by what this successful collaboration of dedicated professionals have (and will continue to) accomplish,” Baptista concluded.
