Dane Reister was a Portland police officer when, on June 30, 2011, he shot a 20-year-old man with bipolar disorder, William Kyle Monroe. Reister thought he was shooting beanbags, but he had mixed up his ammunition and shot Monroe with live rounds, causing serious and disabling injuries. Dane Reister, who was fired by Portland police in October 2013 and faced criminal charges for a 2011 shooting, was found dead beside railroad tracks in Washougal, Washington, after he parked his truck on the tracks, according to a Portland Police Bureau memo issued Monday.
His body was discovered near Sixth Street on the south side of the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks about 10:30 a.m.
Crew members on what’s called “the local” train traveling from Camas to Washougal spotted the body, stopped the train and backed up to investigate, said Gus Melonas, a railroad spokesman. The crew confirmed the man was on the railroad property.
