I try not to blog about Kickstarter projects, partly because I wrote a long story about them for the paper last year and haven’t got much to add, partly because there are so many — and good ones — to get behind that I can’t keep up and don’t want to be choosing without substantial information to back up my blessing.

But I’m happy to write about a Kickstarter campaign for finishing funds for “Alien Boy,” a long-gestating documentary about the death of James Chasse, a Portland man who was killed by police as they trying to subdue him on a busy street in broad daylight in 2006.

The film is being directed by Brian Lindstrom, whose 2007 film “Finding Normal” is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen — made here or anywhere else — about the pitfalls that addicts face on the road to recovery.

“Alien Boy” has been at least three years in the making, which isn’t that unusual for a documentary about a legal case that took several years to settle. The settlement came last year, and now the final interviews are in the can and the filmmakers are looking for completion funds to finish editing, scoring and the other final touches that turn raw footage into a polished movie.

They’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the final $12,500 that they need, and they’re well on the way. Have a look at the goodies that are on offer for various levels and see if you can’t help put them over the top.
